I am getting ready to get materials on order for my first build. Thanks to Hibdon I ordered my back and sides last week and should get them this week. I now need to order materials for bracing, top, neck, heck block, binding, etc. Does anyone have a little advice on how much of what to order? Kind of a rule of thumb?

Brad, i'd say go with any of our sponsors here and ask, they will honestly tell you exactly what you'll need, i trust every single one of them!

Hey Brad, I just put a group of these together for one of our members a couple of weeks ago. So this may help you out:

*One top - Spruce, Red Cedar, Yellow Cedar or Redwood, I would stick with Spruce for #1
*Bracewood - about 6 inches in width by 22 inches long will give you lots
*Kerfed linings - 2 spruce for the top 2 Mahogany for the back (or four of anything really)
*Binding - 4 pcs, 2 on top 2 for the back
*Rosette - variable, simplest is just some b/w/b purfs ganged up.
*Neck - one piece 3 x 4 x 24 Mahogany
*Neck and tail blocks - if you were careful you could get them out of your neck block cutoff otherwise a couple more small pieces
*Neck Hardware - a number of different options, I offer bolts and threaded inserts but others use barrel nuts.
*Headplate - typically Rosewood or Ebony, you could use part of your back set scraps with careful planning
*Bridge blank - rosewood or ebony
*Bridge plate - rosewood or maple
*Fretboard - rosewood or ebony
*Truss Rod
*Fret wire - about 5 feet
*Tuners - lots of options here
*Bone nut and saddle
*Bridge pins
*Fret position markers - abalone, MOP

That would cover it!

Many sponsors have most of it, LMI amd Stewmac certainly have all of it. I now stock all of this stuff so I can quote you a price also.

Happy travels, you are about to embark on a journey!

Great Luck!

Shane

Brad, I think Shane's list is very good!

Maybe consider buying a few more bindings/purflings that you need. I remember on my first I had just bought the exact amount I needed and of course I broke a piece and I was stuck waiting about two weeks for some more binding to arrive from LMI...

Bindings/purflings are some of the cheapest items you'll buy when you consider all the costs involved. I now buy them by the dozen. You get a price break, you'll use them anyhow (on other projects) and you have the piece of mind knowing that you have some on hand if something goes wrong....

I would have to agree. I got my wood from shane, in fact it just came yesterday!

You are also going to want at least 2 extra bindings to bind the fingerboard. (at least I would...)
